, Senior Vice President, Human Resources

As someone who loves to learn new things, Kristen Ludgate – who leads 3M’s human resources team – has certainly had ample opportunity. In her years with the company, Kristen has served in a variety of roles across several organizations.

“I’m adaptable, I’m curious, and I love change,” Kristen says. “3M offers so many opportunities to learn and grow, so it’s been a great place for me to work. There are always new challenges, and the people here love coming together to solve them.”

Kristen began her 3M career in Legal Affairs, where she held several positions including chief employment counsel. In her next role, as vice president of Compliance & Business Conduct and chief compliance officer, Kristen led 3M’s global compliance program and chaired 3M’s executive Business Conduct Committee. She then became vice president, Global Human Resources Business Operations, leading a team of HR professionals supporting 3M business operations and strategies worldwide – focusing on talent, organizational effectiveness and change management. Before assuming her current role, Kristen led Corporate Communications and Enterprise Services and the company’s social invest arm, 3Mgives.

Across these different 3M organizations, one thing has remained constant – the spirit of her colleagues. “3Mers everywhere are amazingly dedicated, creative and purposeful,” Kristen observes. “There’s a strong drive to do the right thing and to make the world better.”

A graduate of Bowdoin College and the University of Minnesota Law School, Kristen’s career outside 3M took her from various roles in higher education to private practice as a commercial lawyer in Minneapolis.

Kristen is a frequent speaker on various workplace, legal, ethics and leadership topics. Along with her hobbies of hiking, music and reading, Kristen’s current passion is restoring a cottage that sits high on the bluffs of the Mississippi River and watching the eagles soar by. Kristen and her husband live in St. Paul and have two grown children.

"As leaders, it is essential to create an inclusive environment where people from different backgrounds can be themselves and bring their full potential to the table. And, it’s all about the team—working together, we learn more and we can help each other out, which also allows us to do our best work for 3M."
